Passport to Greece at Central Market Runs April 29 – May 12

Today through May 12, Central Market will feature Greece during their annual Passport event.  A few weeks ago I was invited to a sneak peak event where I sampled food and drink offerings that will be available during the two week period. While I’m not Greek, I ate my fare share of authentic Greek food growing up in New York. I’m excited by many of the offerings that will be featured.

Some of the chef-prepared foods will include:

  • Spanakopita – flaky puff pasty stuffed with spinach and feta cheese
  • Souvlaki – skewered marinated meat
  • Moussaka – a meat and eggplant casserole with Greek spices topped with béchamel sauce
  • Baklava – nut-filled pastry drizzled with honey
  • Tzatziki – yogurt dip prepared with cucumber and garlic

The shelves will be stocked with imported Greek olive oils, wines, jams, olives and honey. Stock your own pantry or combine these items to make a great gift basket. You’ll be able to pair these foods with fine wines from Greece that will also be available for tasting at the stores.

Learn about Greek wines and how to prepare authentic food from renowned Greek chefs and winemakers. Some of the featured classes will include: Phyllo Favorites, The Greek Garden and Pasta from Greece.

Finally, don’t forget to attend the Greek Festival Stroll on May 1 from 5-8 pm to sample delicious Greek delicacies like the ones seen in the photos on today’s post.  I didn’t get a good pic but my favorite dish of the day was the tapenade-stuffed branzino.  It will be sold as a ready-to-cook item in the seafood department.  You must try it!
